This is quite a heavy upright hoover, which is all the more surprising given how plasticky all the bits are that you handle. For example, you do have to wonder if the extension hose, turbo-brush, and other attachments will last more than a year or two. Nonetheless, it does have a reasonably strong suction which picks up everything you want it to. Only downside is the quite small drum which requires regular emptyings. Again, this is quite plasticky and doesn’t look like it will last the course. But given the price and its performance, it’s certainly an ok hoover. It won’t replace (nor does it get close to) my other hoover which is a Miele upright. Sorry !

I haven’t used an upright vacuum cleaner for at least 25 years and have certainly never used a bagless vacuum cleaner before, so this was a bit of an experiment for me. The reason for trying this “Electrolux Z3278AZ Powerglide Pet 1800w Cyclonic Bagless Upright Vacuum Cleaner” was that my wife finds our existing vacuum cleaner heavy to use. I thought (wrongly as it turns out) that an upright might be the answer to that (which might have meant that I got to vacuum less often…).

However, this Electrolux does an excellent job. It certainly picks up far more than any of our recent vacuum cleaners (so much that I wonder how long our carpets will last), the bag-less design means that the suction doesn’t drop as much, and emptying is a doddle. It has a good, long cable too, certainly longer than any of our other recent cleaners. It does have a strange tendency to tie itself in knots though. For anybody not worried about the weight and who has big open spaces to clean (rather than small rooms or rooms with lots of furniture or other clutter), I would certainly recommend this Electrolux cleaner.

On the other hand, it you have lots of small spaces, lots of clutter, lots of stairs, or not a lot of strength then this may not be for you.

Two other minor points. Firstly, as other reviewers have said, this cleaner pumps out a lot of hot air, so be prepared to vacuum in your scivvies, particularly on a hot day. Secondly, on our one at least, there is a join between two plastic components near the top rear of the handle that isn’t quite smooth, so a sharp bit rubs against the palm of your hand.

Those are minor points though. On the whole, this is an excellent cleaner. For those with large open spaces I would definitely recommend it.

We’ve had Electrolux products before and the quality has always been good. However we haven’t tried Electrolux vacuum cleaners since a bagged version we had in the early 90′s.

Firstly, bagless is definitely the way to go. Between my Mum and I we have had a couple of Dysons, and a couple of Vax vacuums.

I have more recently been using a Vax which apart from when the filter gets clogged up, already far outweighed the Dyson So I expected this to be on a par with the Vax. Wrong! Despite having 200w extra power, it feels at least twice as powerful!

Putting it together was relatively easy, a little bit of a struggle but certainly not complicated. My mum tried out the vacuum first and said it was by far better than the Dyson!

The power lead is a very decent length, however the little bracket thing to wrap the cord round on the vacuum was just too small. I had the same problem with the Vax, and this is the only advantage the Dyson has over the other two!

Warning – the vacuum is very heavy to lift and so would not suit elderly / disabled / or indeed anyone who will struggle to carry awkward items up a flight of stairs – which you will need to do as the hose is not long enough to reach the top of a standard flight.

Due to the power it is very noisy – and may upset the pets which you’ll probably have, if you need a pet-specific vacuum! It did however clear the carpets of hairs (mine and the cat’s!) very well.

My Mum and I would both absolutely recommend this product (and tell you don’t waste your cash on Dysons – it seems you are just paying for the name.)

  4. The usual suspect

Our previous cleaner was/is a Dyson DC01 which is probably one of the first Dyson’s? I guess Dyson are the benchmark thesedays so my review is mainly based on whether it was worth the change or not. My reason for change was the Dyson was struggling on suction and it appeared in the Vine program.

First off, I have to mention the sweat inducing struggle I had to get it out of the box. It was quite comical trying to get it out on my own. I felt like a vet.

Assembly required holding the handle in position and fitting two screws into plastic.Either sit there and try to work out where accessories fit (as I did) or refer to the paper manual or quick guide for help.

From the off, the difference in cleaning power is quite remarkable. The Dyson was 1200W and this is 1800W but the difference more than outweighs the difference. Start the Electrolux and grab hold! The effort required to clean the house was much less since only one pass was required.

Use of the hose was excellent too. The ‘Turbo brush’ attachment does a cracking job. The only issue I had when cleaning the stairs was that when the cleaner is started up, the hose contracts considerably and as a result the tops steps were a struggle to reach (this is only a small house too). The Dyson was just right but was harder to clean the steps with.

I’ve used it on the brumbrum and the Electrolux still performs excellently. The hose and accessories seemed well suited to getting into the nook and cranny’s easily.

My major gripe with the Electrolux is the cable maintainer. The length of cable is long, which is fine but the onboard storage system is insufficient. Make one mistake when wrapping it up and the cale will be spilling over the edge of the maintainer. The Dyson oversized the maintainers and as a consequence wrapping up the cable is simple and quick. The Electrolux requires a little bit of concentration. Photo uploaded.

Just on cleaning efficiency alone the Electrolux has been a well worth product for me.

    The Rating is:
Although I have had Electrolux hoovers before, this is the first bagless vacuum cleaner I have had and I was surprised at how much fluff/dirt had been picked up on just one run through the house. Perhaps this is just because you can see the dirt, rather than it being hidden away in a bag. I did notice that it left temporary wheel marks on the medium length carpet (as opposed to short length), but perhaps this was because the suction was so good.

It looks and feels high quality and the attachments were easy to fit and use, although the flex hose wasn’t long enough to do one flight of stairs.

I found it heavy to lift, although light to use and considering its size, not too noisy.

It did a very good job picking up dog hairs even from an all wool carpet runner.

    I would recommend this product.
